Structured Literacy Research: New Evidence from IDA Conference 2024

We’re proud to share our significant contributions to literacy research presented at the 2024 International Dyslexia Association Conference in Dallas, Texas. Our team, represented by Isabella Ilievski and Laura Janakiefski, showcased three compelling research posters and participated in an enlightening symposium focused on structured literacy implementation. Educators can catch up on what they missed by checking out the posters below! Please reach out to us on our main website page, if you have any questions.

Research Highlights

Consistent Handwriting Instruction Increases Proficiency Statewide

Our first poster explored the impact of consistent handwriting instruction in Alabama schools during 2023, revealing key insights into how systematic practice affects student proficiency. The study, led by Dr. Rachel Schechter and team, provided valuable data for educators considering handwriting intervention programs.

Structured Literacy Implementation Results

Explicit Structured Phonics Improves Literacy Gains in Pilot Schools

The second poster examined the transformative effects of implementing explicit structured phonics instruction across 17 schools. This research demonstrated how strategic phonics integration can enhance overall reading skill development and student outcomes.

Evidence-Based Reading Intervention Research

Small-Group, Targeted Phonics Intervention for Older Students Helps Close Gaps

Our third poster tackled the critical issue of upper elementary intervention, specifically examining the impact of Tier 2 phonics intervention in grades 4-5. The findings suggest promising approaches for “flipping the triangle” – reducing the number of students requiring intensive intervention through effective Tier 2 support.

Symposium Spotlight: Impact of Structured Literacy

The highlight of our conference presence was the symposium “Simple Sounds to Powerful Words: Education Leaders Discuss Structured Literacy in Grades 3-5.” This collaborative presentation featured our research alongside insights from Laura Stewart and Dr. Amy Boza, enriched by real-world implementation experiences from district leaders in Boerne, Texas. Their participation added valuable perspective on how research translates into classroom success, particularly in implementing phonics programs in upper elementary grades.

Looking Forward

These presentations represent our ongoing commitment to advancing literacy research and supporting evidence-based educational practices. The enthusiastic reception and engaging discussions at IDA reinforce the importance of continuing this vital work.
