LXD Research vs. Leanlab Education
LXD Research is an independent edtech research firm founded by Dr. Rachel Schechter, specializing in ESSA-aligned efficacy studies, state approval submissions, and evidence certifications. We’re built around one question: what does your product need to prove, and to whom?
Leanlab Education builds relationships between edtech companies and schools for co-design and product iteration. That’s a different service answering a different question — and understanding the difference is critical before you invest your research budget in either direction.
Choose LXD Research if…
- You have an existing product and need ESSA Tier I, II, or III evidence
- You need user research with actionable findings, not open-ended co-design
- You’re pursuing state approval lists, Evidence for ESSA, or Digital Promise
- You need school recruitment, IRB, and DSAs handled end to end
- You want EduEvidence certification included in your study
- You need research findings your sales team can actually use
Choose Leanlab if…
- Your product is still in early concept or co-development with educators
- You want structured practitioner input to shape core product decisions
- You are not yet ready for or aiming for approval on state lists
- Pilot access for user feedback is the primary need
Leanlab Is a Co-Design Studio. LXD Research Is a Research Firm. These Are Not the Same Thing.
Leanlab Education is a nonprofit whose mission is to improve edtech products by embedding educators in the development process. Their own materials describe their work as co-designing research “between edtech companies and schools to develop products that meet the needs of and thrive in contexts unique to school end-users.” Development is the operative word. The school network exists to give early-stage companies structured access to practitioner input while a product is still being shaped — not to generate publishable evidence about a product that already works.
LXD Research covers a fundamentally different part of the product lifecycle. For targeted user research — structured feedback on specific product questions — we draw on our own educator community. For efficacy studies, we work primarily with a client’s existing district customers, where the product is already in use and schools have a genuine stake in understanding the results. Dr. Rachel Schechter, whose prior roles include Director of Research at Lexia Learning and VP of Learning Sciences at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, built LXD Research around a single principle: every engagement, whether it’s a targeted user study or a full Tier I efficacy trial, is designed to produce findings you can act on and evidence you can stand behind.
Already past the co-design stage? LXD Research has a research path for every stage from first evidence credential to Tier I efficacy study.
Get in TouchZero for Three: Leanlab’s Correlational Studies Did Not Achieve Statistical Significance — Per Their Own Commissioned Analysis
This isn’t a competitor’s characterization of Leanlab’s track record — it comes from a thematic analysis Leanlab commissioned themselves, conducted by EdTech Recharge and published in 2022. The report reviewed 14 research studies Leanlab conducted between 2020 and 2021 across seven products. Three of those studies reached the correlational stage — the level that could, if statistically significant, qualify as ESSA Tier III (Promising Evidence).
All three produced statistically insignificant results. The report attributes this to pandemic disruptions, poor attendance and high attrition, insufficient time to address issues surfaced in earlier phases, and — notably — what it describes as a “potentially weak theory of change” in some cases. The report’s own conclusion recommends investing more heavily in formative research before attempting efficacy studies, and developing “clearly defined intended outcomes supported by a theory of change” first.
That’s a reasonable recommendation for early-stage product development. It’s also a candid acknowledgment that Leanlab’s model is not designed to produce the statistically significant outcome data that ESSA Tier III, Tier II, or Tier I certification requires. Their own analysis confirms that even reaching correlational significance is not a reliable outcome of the Leanlab pathway.
Need evidence that actually passes ESSA review? LXD Research designs studies from the outset to meet the criteria reviewers use — not just to generate findings.
Get in TouchStates Are Now Scoring Your Evidence — and a Pilot Isn’t a Study
The education policy landscape has shifted decisively toward requiring ESSA-aligned evidence for procurement. Michigan’s landmark literacy legislation, backed by $87 million in state funding, introduced a points-based ranking model where programs with Tier I evidence earn more than those with Tier III, and programs with no evidence earn nothing at all. Arizona’s Move On When Reading law requires that Core, Supplemental, and Intervention programs each independently meet ESSA Tier 1, 2, or 3 standards. Mississippi’s Senate Bill 2487 is extending evidence requirements into grades 4–8 with an eighth-grade reading gate starting in 2027.
In this environment, the question isn’t just whether you have a study — it’s whether the study you have was designed to pass the specific review criteria in the states where your customers operate. A classroom pilot without comparison groups, standardized measures, and statistical significance doesn’t qualify as Tier III evidence, let alone Tier II or I. LXD Research designs every study with the end review criteria in mind from the first planning conversation. We’ve supported state board approval processes in Arizona, Michigan, Utah, Arkansas, and Wyoming, and we’ve produced 25+ studies approved on Evidence for ESSA — 64% at the two most rigorous tiers — more than any other independent research organization since 2020.
Need your study to sail through a state evaluation process with high scores? That’s exactly what we’re built for.
Get in TouchLXD Research Can Take You From Your First Evidence Credential All the Way to Tier I
Digital Promise is the only U.S. nonprofit that validates ESSA Tier IV (Demonstrates a Rationale) and ESSA Tier III (Promising Evidence) research through its Research-Based Design certification. For many edtech companies, it’s the right first formal credential — achievable before a full efficacy study and increasingly referenced in district RFPs and state procurement guidance. LXD Research is the only research partner that actively supports Digital Promise submission as a standard service. For a broader overview of how edtech validation works, we are guest authors for ISTE on making sense of edtech validation — a guide written for educators and edtech leaders navigating this landscape. Between 2022 and 2025, over 60% of all products certified by Digital Promise worked with LXD Research.
From there, LXD Research can take a company through Tier III and into Tier I or II efficacy evidence as a continuous, coherent strategy — not a series of disconnected engagements with different vendors. And for companies running real-time efficacy studies, our work doesn’t pause between data collection and the final report. We provide product improvement insights throughout the study, so the research informs your product roadmap in real time, not just your marketing materials after the fact.
EduEvidence certification is included as standard in every LXD Research study package. Leanlab does not offer Digital Promise submission support, EduEvidence certification, or state approval list guidance as part of its model.
Not sure where to start on your evidence journey? We’ll give you an honest assessment of what tier you can realistically pursue and what it takes to get there.
