LXD Research vs.
Instructure LearnPlatform
Need ESSA evidence that survives independent review? LXD Research is built for exactly that. Instructure LearnPlatform (formerly LearnPlatform, now part of Instructure Learn) can help education companies analyze platform usage and engagement within the Instructure platform. LXD Research designs independent ESSA-aligned efficacy studies — with school recruitment, IRB support, EduEvidence validation, Digital Promise certification, and submission-ready reporting included.
Choose LXD Research if…
- You need ESSA Tier I, II, or III efficacy evidence
- You need independent research that reviewers trust
- You need school recruitment, IRB, and DSAs handled for you
- You’re pursuing state approval lists, Evidence for ESSA, EduEvidence, or Digital Promise
- Your sales team needs research that holds up in district procurement
Choose Instructure LearnPlatform if…
- Your product is deeply embedded in Canvas
- You need platform usage, engagement, or completion analytics
- Your primary goal is internal product insight
- You are not aiming for approval on state lists
What LearnPlatform Does Well — and Where Its Limitations Are
Instructure LearnPlatform — acquired by Instructure in 2022 and now part of the Instructure Learn suite — delivers genuine value for organizations that need analytics on how products perform within the Instructure platform. Usage tracking, engagement metrics, completion rates, and product comparison dashboards are LearnPlatform’s core strengths. For internal product teams that need to understand adoption patterns, or districts that want a high-level view across their edtech stack, that capability is real and useful.
But usage analytics and independent efficacy research are fundamentally different things. LearnPlatform can tell you that students using your product logged in more often and completed more modules. What it cannot tell you — in a form that ESSA reviewers, state approval committees, or district procurement officers will accept — is whether students learned more because of your product — measured with standardized assessments, and for Tiers I and II, against a comparison group — conducted by an independent third party.
When Schools Are Instructure’s Customers, the Research Isn’t Really Third Party
Here’s the structural reality: school districts pay Instructure for Canvas. That makes them Instructure’s customers — which means any research Instructure produces about products on its platform is being conducted by an organization with an active financial relationship with the very institutions it’s studying. That’s not a question of intent; it’s a question of structure. And it’s exactly the kind of relationship that district procurement committees, state approval reviewers, and Evidence for ESSA evaluators are trained to flag.
Genuine third-party research means the research firm has no platform to protect, no subscription to maintain, and no financial relationship with the schools in the study. LXD Research has none of those entanglements. Our only stake in any study is producing findings that survive external review — which is precisely why they do. That structural independence is one of the most valuable things we bring to the companies we work with.
Our track record speaks for itself: 25+ studies approved on Evidence for ESSA, 60%+ of Digital Promise certified products from 2022–2025, and state approval submissions guided in Arizona, Utah, and Arkansas. Or get your study to sail through the state evaluation process with high scores.
Get in TouchLearnPlatform Doesn’t Include School Recruitment — and That Changes Everything
One of the most underestimated challenges in running a genuine ESSA-aligned study is recruiting the right schools: districts with sufficient enrollment in your product, suitable comparison groups where Tiers I or II are the goal, and the administrative capacity to sign data sharing agreements and stay engaged through a full academic year. Based on publicly available service descriptions, Instructure LearnPlatform does not include full school recruitment as a standard component of its research offerings. The burden of identifying, approaching, and onboarding study schools falls on the edtech company — which rarely has a dedicated team for it.
LXD Research includes school recruitment in every study package. We maintain district relationships across the country, we know how to match study design requirements to the right school profiles, and we manage IRB submissions, data sharing agreement workflows, and ongoing communication from kickoff through final report. This is often the difference between a study that starts on time and one that stalls for six months before a single data point is collected.
Correlations Without Benchmark Context Don’t Help Educators Decide
LearnPlatform’s research outputs are built around platform data, which typically produces correlations: usage of Feature X correlates with Score Y. The problem isn’t just that correlations are difficult to interpret in isolation — it’s that LearnPlatform’s reports often don’t provide the benchmark context that makes a correlation meaningful in the first place. If a student’s score correlates with how often they logged in, an administrator still needs to know: what does that score represent? Is it proficiency? Grade level? Did the students who improved cross a benchmark threshold — or are they still below it?
LXD Research reports are anchored to real-world benchmarks, grade-level standards, intervention thresholds, and normed assessment measures. We translate effect sizes into weeks or months of additional learning growth — because that’s what educators understand and what buyers act on. We go further than what’s technically required by also reporting how many students advanced an entire skill level, moving out of the intervention tier entirely. And when whole-group results are mixed, we apply a pockets-of-success analysis to identify where the program worked — by subgroup, implementation context, or usage intensity — giving your team honest, actionable findings rather than a summary that buries the story.
Your reports should work as hard as your product does. LXD Research delivers findings that move through review — and through sales conversations.
Get in TouchThe Evidence Gatekeepers Require More Than Platform Analytics
Arizona’s Move On When Reading law requires that Core, Supplemental, and Intervention programs each independently meet ESSA Tier 1, 2, or 3 standards. Michigan’s literacy ranking system scores products on ESSA tier level — directly affecting competitive product placement and access to $87 million in state literacy funds. Mississippi’s Senate Bill 2487 is extending evidence requirements into grades 4–8 with an eighth-grade reading gate starting in 2027. Platform engagement data does not satisfy any of these requirements.
LXD Research has guided state board approval processes in Arizona, Utah, and Arkansas. We design every study from the outset with specific state submission requirements in mind — because knowing how to produce a rigorous study and knowing how to navigate a state’s documentation checklist are related but distinct skills. LearnPlatform, based on its publicly available service descriptions, does not offer state approval list navigation as part of its offering.
LXD Research Is the Only Partner That Supports Digital Promise Submission — and 60%+ of Certified Products Prove It
Digital Promise is the only U.S. nonprofit that validates ESSA Tier IV (Demonstrates a Rationale) and ESSA Tier III (Promising Evidence) research through its Research-Based Design certification. For many edtech companies, it’s the right first credential — achievable before a full efficacy study and increasingly referenced in district RFPs and state procurement guidance. LXD Research are also guest authors for ISTE on making sense of edtech validation — a practical guide to edtech validation for educators and product leaders.
LXD Research actively supports clients through the Digital Promise submission process as a standard service. Between 2022 and 2025, over 60% of all products certified by Digital Promise worked with LXD Research — a market concentration that reflects years of building the specific expertise these submissions require. LXD Research can take a company from a first Digital Promise submission through Tier III and into Tier I or II efficacy evidence as a coherent, continuous evidence strategy.
Not sure where to start on your evidence journey? We’ll tell you honestly what tier you can realistically pursue — and what it takes to get there.
