Comparing Research Partners

LXD Research vs. Leanlab Education

LXD Research is an independent edtech research firm founded by Dr. Rachel Schechter, specializing in ESSA-aligned efficacy studies, state approval submissions, and evidence certifications. We’re built around one question: what does your product need to prove, and to whom?

Leanlab Education builds relationships between edtech companies and schools for co-design and product iteration. That’s a different service answering a different question — and understanding the difference is critical before you invest your research budget in either direction.

25+ Studies approved on Evidence for ESSA since 2020
64% Rated Strong or Moderate — the two most rigorous ESSA tiers
60%+ Of Digital Promise certified products (2022–2025) worked with LXD Research
0 for 3 Leanlab’s own correlational studies achieved statistical significance — per their commissioned analysis
Short answer: Leanlab is a co-design studio built for very early-stage product development. LXD Research is a research firm built for companies with an existing product that need formal ESSA evidence, state approval submissions, Digital Promise or EduEvidence certification, and educator-friendly reporting their sales team can use.

Choose LXD Research if…

  • You have an existing product and need ESSA Tier I, II, or III evidence
  • You need user research with actionable findings, not open-ended co-design
  • You’re pursuing state approval lists, Evidence for ESSA, or Digital Promise
  • You need school recruitment, IRB, and DSAs handled end to end
  • You want EduEvidence certification included in your study
  • You need research findings your sales team can actually use

Choose Leanlab if…

  • Your product is still in early concept or co-development with educators
  • You want structured practitioner input to shape core product decisions
  • You are not yet ready for or aiming for approval on state lists
  • Pilot access for user feedback is the primary need

Understanding the Difference

Leanlab Is a Co-Design Studio. LXD Research Is a Research Firm. These Are Not the Same Thing.

Leanlab Education is a nonprofit whose mission is to improve edtech products by embedding educators in the development process. Their own materials describe their work as co-designing research “between edtech companies and schools to develop products that meet the needs of and thrive in contexts unique to school end-users.” Development is the operative word. The school network exists to give early-stage companies structured access to practitioner input while a product is still being shaped — not to generate publishable evidence about a product that already works.

LXD Research covers a fundamentally different part of the product lifecycle. For targeted user research — structured feedback on specific product questions — we draw on our own educator community. For efficacy studies, we work primarily with a client’s existing district customers, where the product is already in use and schools have a genuine stake in understanding the results. Dr. Rachel Schechter, whose prior roles include Director of Research at Lexia Learning and VP of Learning Sciences at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, built LXD Research around a single principle: every engagement, whether it’s a targeted user study or a full Tier I efficacy trial, is designed to produce findings you can act on and evidence you can stand behind.

The practical distinction: Leanlab helps you figure out what your product should be. LXD Research helps you prove to a state review board, a district procurement committee, and the Evidence for ESSA review panel that your product works.

Already past the co-design stage? LXD Research has a research path for every stage from first evidence credential to Tier I efficacy study.

What Leanlab’s Own Research Shows

Zero for Three: Leanlab’s Correlational Studies Did Not Achieve Statistical Significance — Per Their Own Commissioned Analysis

This isn’t a competitor’s characterization of Leanlab’s track record — it comes from a thematic analysis Leanlab commissioned themselves, conducted by EdTech Recharge and published in 2022. The report reviewed 14 research studies Leanlab conducted between 2020 and 2021 across seven products. Three of those studies reached the correlational stage — the level that could, if statistically significant, qualify as ESSA Tier III (Promising Evidence).

All three produced statistically insignificant results. The report attributes this to pandemic disruptions, poor attendance and high attrition, insufficient time to address issues surfaced in earlier phases, and — notably — what it describes as a “potentially weak theory of change” in some cases. The report’s own conclusion recommends investing more heavily in formative research before attempting efficacy studies, and developing “clearly defined intended outcomes supported by a theory of change” first.

That’s a reasonable recommendation for early-stage product development. It’s also a candid acknowledgment that Leanlab’s model is not designed to produce the statistically significant outcome data that ESSA Tier III, Tier II, or Tier I certification requires. Their own analysis confirms that even reaching correlational significance is not a reliable outcome of the Leanlab pathway.

What this means for your evidence strategy: A study that doesn’t reach statistical significance doesn’t qualify for any ESSA evidence tier. If your product needs to appear on a state approval list, earn an Evidence for ESSA rating, or satisfy a district RFP with explicit evidence requirements, the Leanlab research model has not reliably produced that outcome — by their own account.

Need evidence that actually passes ESSA review? LXD Research designs studies from the outset to meet the criteria reviewers use — not just to generate findings.

Why This Gap Is Widening

States Are Now Scoring Your Evidence — and a Pilot Isn’t a Study

The education policy landscape has shifted decisively toward requiring ESSA-aligned evidence for procurement. Michigan’s landmark literacy legislation, backed by $87 million in state funding, introduced a points-based ranking model where programs with Tier I evidence earn more than those with Tier III, and programs with no evidence earn nothing at all. Arizona’s Move On When Reading law requires that Core, Supplemental, and Intervention programs each independently meet ESSA Tier 1, 2, or 3 standards. Mississippi’s Senate Bill 2487 is extending evidence requirements into grades 4–8 with an eighth-grade reading gate starting in 2027.

In this environment, the question isn’t just whether you have a study — it’s whether the study you have was designed to pass the specific review criteria in the states where your customers operate. A classroom pilot without comparison groups, standardized measures, and statistical significance doesn’t qualify as Tier III evidence, let alone Tier II or I. LXD Research designs every study with the end review criteria in mind from the first planning conversation. We’ve supported state board approval processes in Arizona, Michigan, Utah, Arkansas, and Wyoming, and we’ve produced 25+ studies approved on Evidence for ESSA — 64% at the two most rigorous tiers — more than any other independent research organization since 2020.

Leanlab’s co-design model can tell you how educators experience your product in early pilots. LXD Research can produce the evidence that gets your product onto state approval lists, into district procurement decisions, and through Evidence for ESSA review.

Need your study to sail through a state evaluation process with high scores? That’s exactly what we’re built for.

The Evidence Pathway

LXD Research Can Take You From Your First Evidence Credential All the Way to Tier I

Digital Promise is the only U.S. nonprofit that validates ESSA Tier IV (Demonstrates a Rationale) and ESSA Tier III (Promising Evidence) research through its Research-Based Design certification. For many edtech companies, it’s the right first formal credential — achievable before a full efficacy study and increasingly referenced in district RFPs and state procurement guidance. LXD Research is the only research partner that actively supports Digital Promise submission as a standard service. For a broader overview of how edtech validation works, we are guest authors for ISTE on making sense of edtech validation — a guide written for educators and edtech leaders navigating this landscape. Between 2022 and 2025, over 60% of all products certified by Digital Promise worked with LXD Research.

From there, LXD Research can take a company through Tier III and into Tier I or II efficacy evidence as a continuous, coherent strategy — not a series of disconnected engagements with different vendors. And for companies running real-time efficacy studies, our work doesn’t pause between data collection and the final report. We provide product improvement insights throughout the study, so the research informs your product roadmap in real time, not just your marketing materials after the fact.

EduEvidence certification is included as standard in every LXD Research study package. Leanlab does not offer Digital Promise submission support, EduEvidence certification, or state approval list guidance as part of its model.

Not sure where to start on your evidence journey? We’ll give you an honest assessment of what tier you can realistically pursue and what it takes to get there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About LXD Research vs. Leanlab Education

Is LXD Research an alternative to Leanlab Education?
They serve different purposes, so the answer depends on what you need. Leanlab is a co-design studio built for early-stage product development — helping companies embed educators in shaping the product itself. LXD Research is a research firm built for companies with an existing product that need formal ESSA evidence, state approval submissions, Digital Promise or EduEvidence certification, and educator-friendly reporting. Many companies engage Leanlab early and LXD Research once the product is ready for formal evidence work.
Can Leanlab’s research qualify as ESSA evidence?
In theory, a correlational study could qualify as ESSA Tier III if it achieves statistical significance with standardized measures. In practice, Leanlab’s own 2022 commissioned thematic analysis found that all three of their correlational studies produced statistically insignificant results — zero for three. The report attributed this to factors including short implementation timelines, high attrition, and in some cases a potentially weak theory of change. Pilot studies conducted without comparison groups, standardized measures, and adequate implementation time do not qualify for ESSA Tier I or II evidence.
What is the difference between a co-design study and an efficacy study?
A co-design study is formative — it’s designed to gather practitioner input to shape a product while it’s still being developed. The goal is better product decisions, not publishable evidence of outcomes. An efficacy study measures whether a product that already exists produces better student outcomes than a comparison condition, using standardized assessments, rigorous study design, and statistical analysis. State approval lists, Evidence for ESSA, and district procurement requirements all require efficacy evidence — not co-design feedback.
Does LXD Research include school recruitment?
Yes, end to end. We identify districts, handle outreach, provide templated MOUs and data sharing agreements, submit directly to district departments of research and accountability, and manage external IRB processes. For most edtech companies, assembling that infrastructure independently adds months to a study before a single student is enrolled. We have it ready to go.
Can LXD Research support Digital Promise and EduEvidence certification?
Yes to both. LXD Research is the only research partner that actively supports Digital Promise Research-Based Design certification submissions — over 60% of all products certified by Digital Promise between 2022 and 2025 worked with us. EduEvidence certification — validated by EduEvidence.org, where LXD Research is listed as a recognized partner — is included as standard in every study package. Neither is offered by Leanlab.
Can I work with both Leanlab and LXD Research?
Yes — and for some companies it’s a sensible sequence. Leanlab for early co-design and product shaping, then LXD Research when the product is stable enough for formal evidence work. The two models address different stages of the product lifecycle. What matters is understanding that Leanlab’s co-design pathway does not reliably produce the evidence that state approval lists and Evidence for ESSA review require — that work needs a different kind of partner.
What states does LXD Research have approval experience in?
LXD Research has supported state board approval processes in Arizona, Michigan, Utah, Arkansas, and Wyoming. We design every study from the outset with specific state submission requirements in mind — because knowing how to produce a rigorous study and knowing how to navigate a state’s documentation checklist are related but distinct skills.

Ready to Build Evidence That Actually Passes Review?

LXD Research designs ESSA-aligned studies from the outset to meet the criteria that state reviewers, Evidence for ESSA panels, and district procurement teams require — with school recruitment, EduEvidence certification, Digital Promise support, and educator-friendly reporting included.
